Roadside Assistance for Rental Cars: What Every Host and Guest Should Know

The Call Every Host Dreads

"Hi, your car won't start. I'm in a parking lot in downtown Nashville and I have dinner reservations in 45 minutes." This call will happen eventually. How you handle it — and how prepared your vehicle is — determines whether this becomes a 1-star review or a "my host was incredible in a tough situation" 5-star story.

What Roadside Assistance Coverage Comes With Turo

Turo includes roadside assistance as part of their host protection. Guests on active trips can access this through the Turo app. It covers towing (up to a specific distance), flat tire assistance, jump starts, lockout service, and fuel delivery. Make sure your guests know this exists — include a line in your welcome message: "If you ever need roadside assistance, you can access it through the Turo app under Help."

What to Have In the Car Just In Case

Turo's roadside assistance is the first line, but having basics in the car covers minor situations quickly: jumper cables or a portable jump starter, a tire inflator/compressor (for slow leaks that don't require a tow), a basic flashlight, and the roadside assistance number clearly noted somewhere in the car. A small emergency kit takes up minimal space and conveys to guests that you've thought about their safety.

When a Guest Calls You Directly About a Breakdown

First: empathize. "I'm really sorry that's happening — let's get you sorted." Then: direct them to Turo roadside assistance through the app if they haven't already. If it's a simple situation (dead battery, they're near a service station), provide practical guidance. If it's complex, Turo's roadside team is better equipped to coordinate than you are remotely. Stay available, stay communicative, and follow up. A guest who had a breakdown that was handled professionally still leaves a good review.

Prevention: The Real Answer

The best roadside assistance story is the one that never happens. Before every rental, verify: battery condition, tire pressure and tread, that all lights work, and that the car starts cleanly. A vehicle that's properly maintained will rarely break down. The $150 pre-summer maintenance check is infinitely better than the towing bill, refund, and bad review that come from a preventable breakdown.
