Rental Car Road Trip: How Guests Use Turo for Epic American Adventures

The American Road Trip Is Having a Moment

Post-COVID travel behavior shifted significantly. People who were cooped up for two years came out wanting experiences — real ones, not just destinations. Road trips boomed. And for many travelers, renting a vehicle for a multi-day driving adventure became the preferred format. Turo became one of the platforms of choice for this: better vehicle selection than a traditional rental, more interesting options, often lower prices for longer rentals.

The Classic Routes Turo Guests Drive

LA to San Francisco on the PCH. Route 66. The Blue Ridge Parkway. Hawaii's Road to Hana. The Florida Keys. New England fall foliage circuits. Austin to Big Bend. These are some of the most popular extended-rental routes and they tell you something about what guests want: scenic, memorable, experiential. The car is part of the experience, not just transportation. A convertible on the PCH hits different than a compact sedan.

What Hosts Should Know About Road Trip Rentals

Road trip renters put on miles. Real miles. A 7-day rental with a "500 miles included" limit is going to cause conflict with someone planning a 2,000-mile road trip. If you want to serve this segment well, either offer a higher mileage allowance explicitly, offer an unlimited miles option (factored into your rate), or make your limits crystal clear so road trip guests know upfront this may not be the right listing for them.

The Right Car for Road Trips

SUVs and crossovers are the most popular road trip vehicles — comfortable for long drives, enough cargo space for luggage, and capable on varied terrain. Convertibles are wildly popular for scenic coastal routes. Pickup trucks for guests going camping or off-road. If you have a vehicle that's particularly well-suited to road trips, say so in your listing description. "Perfect for long road trips — great highway comfort and trunk space for all your gear" speaks directly to this traveler.

Protecting Your Vehicle on Long-Distance Rentals

Before a long rental, make sure the car is in excellent mechanical condition. Tires fully checked (road trip stress tests worn tires fast). Fluids topped. Emergency kit complete. And make sure your GPS tracker is functional — having location visibility on a vehicle crossing multiple states is genuinely important for your peace of mind. A brief check-in message at day 3 of a 7-day trip is both good hospitality and a way to confirm the vehicle is doing well.
